Gabrielle Union’s Daughter Kaavia Gets Props for Bravely Trying a New Food: ‘Sis Was Fighting for Her Life’
Gabrielle Union is one proud mama! Her 5-year-old daughter Kaavia James, who she shares with husband Dwyane Wade, bravely tried a new food at a restaurant. And despite not liking it, Kaavia handled it in the best way — and she’s getting all the props online for it.
“when your taste buds say adventure, but your soul says absolutely not! ?????♀?” the video shared on Kaavia’s Instagram (run by her parents) is captioned. In the video, Kaavia sits at a restaurant with a bowl of fries and what looks like a half-eaten sandwich. Although she got a regular kids meal, she wanted to try something her parents were eating: oysters!

“Kaav, are you so excited to try you first oyster?” her mom asked her. Kaavia smiles and says “Yeah,” but when she gets the oyster, her face tells a different story. Kaavia — whose nickname is Shady Baby for a reason! — looks down at the oyster in her hand with a look of utter confusion. It’s giving why would anyone eat this? And it’s so funny!
She smells it first, almost deciding to give up right there. “Oh no, I don’t want to,” she says, shaking her head and trying to move the oyster out of the way. But she bravely decides to go for it, tilting her head back and letting the oyster slide into her mouth from the shell. After chewing for a few seconds (honestly, much longer than I expected!), she spits it out into her napkin and makes a face like she’s going to gag. Kaavia then shakes her head no and moves her pointer finger to emphasize the point before gagging again. Poor girl!
The Bring It On alum commented, “???????????????????? she tried yall.” She really did! People flocked to the comments to praise her adventurousness.
“Girl, I understand! It’s a no for me too!!” one person wrote. Another said, “Sis was fighting for her life ??????.”
“Kaav you get an A for trying.??????” someone else said. One person commented, “?????? but good for her for giving it a try.” “Girl, she’s better than me. I would’ve stopped after the sniff test??????” another commentor wrote.
In a June 2023 interview with E! News, The Perfect Find actress got candid about her fears surrounding motherhood. “I was afraid of being a bad mom, of not living up to the great moms that I grew up with,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t want my lack of understanding or knowledge on every single thing to leave this gaping hole in her life.”
“As I got more confidence, I’m like, ‘Oh, we’re all winging it? We’re just doing the best we can,’” she added. “It gave me even more confidence to trust that, maybe, I’m solid at this and I’m raising happy, healthy, free Black girls.”
