'Game of Thrones': Chilling final season poster and 3 new trailers tease the epic Battle of Winterfell

With only six episodes left before Game of Thrones declares a victor, the casualties are going to be climbing early and often in the HBO show’s final season. A just-released poster teases the body count to come, and makes it clear that everyone’s life is at stake.

Many of those deaths are bound to happen in the Battle of Winterfell, where the surviving members of House Stark — including Jon Snow, Sansa Stark and Arya Stark (Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams) — lead a desperate last stand in the North against the Night King and his White Walkers. Last month, an Entertainment Weekly on-set story revealed that this fight would be the longest battle sequence ever filmed not only in Game of Thrones history, but also the combined history of television and movies. And footage from Winterfell is on display in three short trailers that HBO rolled out over the past few days.

In “Together,” Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is seen standing in front of Sansa and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) urging an unseen dissenter, “We must fight together now, or die.” That leads into previously-released footage of the Mother of Dragons’ two surviving children soaring above Winterfell, followed by quick shots of a pitched battle fought with fire and brimstone.

“Survival,” meanwhile, strikes a more contemplative note, opening with a shot of Jon standing by Winterfell’s snow-covered Weirwood tree, as Arya looks on from the background. “Think about where we started,” we hear the unwitting scion of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen muse. “Now it’s just us.” Don’t worry, Jon’s will to fight hasn’t been completely drowned by his sorrow. “I need to end this war,” he says, just before the trailer cuts to a shot of Jon and Dany leading Winterfell’s army. They may be surrounded by heavily-armed soldiers, but poor Arya has not such protection. “This is about survival,” an off-screen voice intones, as the assassin races for her life through Winterfell’s winding corridors.

After the battle comes... the “Aftermath.” The longest of the three trailers doesn’t hint at who lives or dies during the Battle of Winterfell. Instead, it’s an eerie peek at a ruined, desolate Winterfell following the cataclysmic clash of clans. While sounds of battle are heard in the background, the camera glides over battlements punctured by arrows and courtyards filled with debris then coming to rest on Jon’s sword, Longclaw, resting in a snowbank. One way or another, Jon’s watch has ended... but ours is just beginning.

Game of Thrones premieres April 14 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
