Plan your Westeros vacation: 'Game of Thrones' studio tour opens next year in Ireland
Game of Thrones is leaving HBO at the end of the upcoming season, but don't worry — you can visit Westeros anytime you like. HBO announced today that The Game of Thrones Studio Tour will be ready for guests in spring 2020, allowing fans to get a first-hand look at the sets, props, costumes and weapons that brought the show to life. The tour will take place at the Linen Mill Studios in Bainbridge, Ireland, one of Game of Thrones' central filming locations.
While HBO has not confirmed which specific Game of Thrones sets will be open to visitors, the newly released concept photos include the great hall at Winterfell, the ancestral castle of House Stark; the throne room and map room at Dragonstone, the castle of House Targaryen; Cersei's courtyard in King's Landing; and the mess hall at Castle Black, stronghold of the Night's Watch. Among the other sets known to have been located at the Linen Mill Studios are parts of Riverrun and the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven. Additionally, the HBO press release mentions "the Wall and the lands beyond," and the kingdoms of Mereen and Bravos.
Like a grander version of the Game of Thrones touring exhibition, which has been attracting visitors worldwide since 2017, the Studio Tour is designed to be a "deeply immersive and sensory experience." The press release promises interactive elements like a "costume department station" and displays of prosthetics and weapons, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Westeros via "a first-of-its-kind collection of information displays." At 110,000 square feet, the new attraction will be more than ten times the size of the touring exhibition.
The studio tour will be the first of the "Game of Thrones Legacy projects" announced by HBO last year. These will include the conversion of several North Ireland filming locations into tourist attractions, including the expansive sets used for Winterfell (filmed in a historic castle), Castle Black (built in an abandoned quarry), and King’s Landing (constructed at Titanic Studios in Belfast).
The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones will premiere on April 14 on HBO.
