This 'Game of Thrones' Prophecy Might Prove Arya Actually Kills Cersei

Warning: This article is dark and full of Game of Thrones season eight spoilers.

Questions around Cersei Lannister’s fate following seven seasons of quietly heinous behavior on Game of Thrones have been feverishly building as the final season marches along to the show’s grand finale. But Sunday night’s episode, “The Long Night,” reminded us of Melisandre’s years-old prophecy to Arya which might prove the Girl With No Name kills Cersei at the end of this saga. When you unpack the prophecy, it’s easy to see how it could pan out. And after seeing Arya kill the Night King, taking down a mortal enemy should be a piece of cake for Westeros’ youngest assassin.

Did Game of Thrones Confirm That Arya Is Really Azor Ahai?

It’s been a minute since we last heard about Melisandre’s prophecy to Arya, so let’s review. Back when Arya was still young and full of vengeance, she went to confront Melisandre for taking Gendry to basecamp Stannis. Melisandre, ever the chill Red Woman that she is, grabs Arya’s face and tells her, “I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you’ll shut forever,” and ends this creep prophecy with: “We will meet again.”

When Arya and Melisandre do meet again at the Battle of Winterfell, the Red Witch reminds her of all the eyes she is destined to shut as a way to keep Arya from becoming scared during the battle, instead encouraging her to fulfill her destiny. Arya ends up picking up on the “blue eyes” part of the prophecy, ultimately killing the Night King at the end of “The Long Night.” But, as it has been noted on Twitter, the “green eyes” part of the prophecy may have yet to come true. And what a fun coincidence that Cersei has green eyes.

Since Arya knows how to wear faces, she could easily get close enough to Cersei to kill her, making this “green eyes” prophecy align with what still needs to be accomplished before season eight wraps. Consider us officially #TeamArya when it comes to who will shut Cersei’s green eyes forever.
