Gary Oldman on the Possibility of Appearing in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ TV Show: ‘I Could Do Dumbledore’

With news recently breaking about the new HBO “Harry Potter” TV series adaptation seeking out its main child cast, everyone is wondering who will be brought aboard to play the show’s adult characters. For the films, Warner Bros. previously sought out a murderer’s row of elite British talent from Richard Harris to Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane to Alan Rickman, Julie Walters to Gary Oldman, and many more. While on the red carpet at the 76th Primetime Emmys, IndieWire asked Oldman if he’d be open to returning to play Sirius Black in the upcoming reboot. Though the actor said “no one’s approached me,” he added that he still holds a soft spot for the character and believes there’s more to explore.

“I love, Sirius,” Oldman said. “He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.”

Oldman said he doesn’t expect to get a call about playing Black in the show — but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be up for another role.

“I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people,” said Oldman to IndieWire. “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”

Oldman was on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards as an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series nominee for the Apple TV+ British espionage series “Slow Horses.” This is Oldman’s first nomination for his performance as Jackson Lamb in three seasons of playing him. The show itself is also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, signaling that its popularity continues to rise.

“It started off very much a show that was culturally very British. And it is, its humor. So I feel like it’s sort of the the little show that could that it’s now reached a much wider audience,” Oldman said. “So to be recognized tonight with nine nominations, it’s a great thing, you know. We started four and a half years ago or whatever at the very height of the pandemic, I can’t believe we shot the first season. In bubbles and being, you know, Covid tested every three days. And it’s amazing that we got through it basically, so we’re thrilled.”
