Surviving RUSH members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have been jamming some of the band’s songs together lately, although fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a RUSH reunion
In a new interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Lifeson revealed that he’s been meeting up with Geddy in-person to jam RUSH songs — something they haven’t done regularly since 2015, when the band played its final shows.
“We decided that we would play some RUSH songs,” Lifeson said. “Because, you know, we haven’t played these songs in 10 years. We started that a couple of weeks ago. We get together one day a week over at his place.”
So far, it’s been slow going, as the guitarist and bassist ease back into the complex songs they helped write together years/decades ago.
“We just picked some RUSH songs and we started playing them and we sound like a really, really bad Rush tribute band,” said Lifeson.
He continued: “Trying to figure out the songs, I’m thinking, ‘Why did we write that so difficult? Why is this so hard to play?’ After about three run-throughs of all of these songs, muscle memory kicks in and your hand just goes to where it goes. You sort of get out of the way and you play and you go, ‘Thank God, I did make this simpler than it felt.'”
However, Lifeson played down any talk of a RUSH reunion, adding, “There’s no rhyme or reason. We’re not planning on going back on the road, finding a new drummer or anything like that. It’s just fun to do it.”
Last year, Lee insinuated that a RUSH reunion could happen, and that he was working on Lifeson to consider touring again. Back in 2021, Lifeson insisted that there was “no way RUSH will ever exist again” following the 2020 passing of drummer Neil Peart.
