With the title for the Young Sheldon spin-off having officially been revealed just last week, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage executive producer Steve Holland has explained why they came up with the idea of developing a spin-off focused on the fan-favorite couple.

In an interview with Deadline, Holland — who also served as one of the executive producers in The Big Bang Theory and its prequel Young Sheldon — revealed that Montana Jordan’s Georgie and Emily Osment’s Mandy’s “chemistry” was one of the factors why they decided to create the spin-off.

“[Montana and Osment] just had such great chemistry, and they were so much fun to watch, and it just seemed like watching them spark together — seemed exciting. It seemed like a fun way to keep telling stories in [the Young Sheldon world],” said Holland.

He added that while Sheldon Cooper’s story has been established from the very start, Georgie and Mandy’s story has remained “open-ended.”

“Their story is open-ended. We don’t know what happened. In Sheldon, we always knew the end of his story from The Big Bang Theory. We always knew he’s gonna grow up and get married and win a Nobel prize,” Holland continued. “With Georgie and Mandy … we don’t really know what happens to them and their relationship and their lives too much.”

When is Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage coming out?

With the official title already out in the open, details about Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage are slowly being revealed. It was previously announced that the spin-off will be part of CBS’ Fall 2024 schedule, but an exact release date has yet to be unveiled. The cast members joining Montana and Osment in the spin-off also remain under wraps.

Meanwhile, the Young Sheldon season finale will air on CBS on May 16 at 8 p.m. ET.
