Geraldo admits Republicans want to limit the number of people who vote
Fox News correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera appeared Wednesday on Fox News Primetime where he split with the Republican Party when speaking about the battle in the Senate over expanding voting rights. In recent weeks, Republicans in state legislatures across the country introduced 253 bills that would, in one way or another, make voting more difficult. Some of the bills that have been introduced would limit mail-in ballots, implement new voter ID requirements and slash registration options, just to name a few.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a fiery Senate hearing discussing the For the People Act, a bill put forth by Democrats to make voting easier, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell argued that “states are not engaging in trying to suppress voters whatsoever.” However, Rivera, a Republican, couldn’t disagree more.
“Republicans want to limit the number of people voting,” Rivera said. “Democrats want everyone to vote. They put the burden of proof, the Republicans do, on the voter. The Democrats say, ‘We assume that you are eligible to vote.’”
Rivera then took things even further.
“Now, I have no problem with federalizing the presidential election,” Rivera said as fellow panelist Karl Rove shook his head. “I would like to have one-size-fits-all in the presidential election. I want to know whether mail-in ballots are appropriate. Absentee ballots.”
Rivera made it clear that he believes Republicans are attempting to restrict voting rights, but he said he doesn’t believe it’s necessary for them to do so to win elections.
“In Ohio, my home state as you know, Brian [Kilmeade], we led absentee ballot vote,” Rivera said. “We had drop boxes and, yet, Donald Trump won decisively by nine points. Republicans can compete. They shouldn't be afraid of it. I think the Democrats just want everyone to vote regardless.”
