Gilmore Girls: Sean Gunn talks Kirk’s most bizarre jobs at EW PopFest

Of all the beloved Stars Hollow townies on Gilmore Girls — and there are a lot of them — Kirk has to be the one with the most eclectic (and lengthy) resume. Over the course of the series, he held dozens of different jobs, from mailman to wedding DJ, video store clerk, rival diner owner, pedicab driver, T-shirt designer, and beauty product inventor/salesman.

During an appearance Saturday at EW PopFest, Sean Gunn, who played Kirk on the series, recalled some more of Kirk’s bizarre career choices, including the one time he had to dress up as a hot dog.

“The hot dog suit was an annoying episode,” Gunn told Kevin T. Porter and Demi Adejuyigbe of the Gilmore Guys podcast during PopFest’s Stars Hollow Countdown Show. “I always say that I metaphorically wore a hot dog suit for the entire run of the show.”

Other memorable ones that came up included the time he had to wear a parachute, when he had to learn to walk on stilts, and when he had to sing a song from Fiddler on the Roof — for which he got some advice from the late Edward Herrmann.

“One of the things I remember most about that episode was I was really nervous about how to sing the song, because I didn’t know if I should try to sing it as well as I could, or how Kirk would sing it … I was in my head about it,” he recalled.

“I remember pulling Ed aside and asking him, ‘You’re a veteran, how do you think I should play this?’ and him giving me the exactly right advice,” Gunn continued. “I think he literally said, ‘Just get out of your head, man. Just go for it.’”
