Gina Gershon nearly put her first onscreen love interest in the hospital.

The actress recently recalled filming her “first love scene ever” with Tom Cruise in their 1988 movie Cocktail, during which he was a total “gentleman,” despite the fact that she “kneed him right in the nose.”

“At one point, he starts off under the covers, and I told him I was very ticklish,” she explained this week on Watch What Happens Live. “I said, ‘No, no, don’t ever do that.’ And in one take — I think he wanted a reaction — and he grabbed my stomach, and I kneed him right in the nose. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I just broke Tom Cruise’s nose.’ He’s like, ‘No, no, you told me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry,’ he was like, ‘No, it was my fault.’ And he was so overprotective over me. He was great.”

Cruise starred in the romantic-comedy drama as Brian, a business student and bartender who moves to Jamaica to raise enough money to open his own bar, and he ends up falling in love with artist Jordan (Elisabeth Shue). Gershon played Coral, a photographer who dates Brian before cheating with his mentor and business partner Doug (Bryan Brown), prompting him to make the move.

Although Cruise’s then-wife Mimi Rogers “was very present” on set as they had “just gotten married,” Gershon said she and her co-star “did kiss as much as we could,” adding: “Every scene it was like, ‘Should we kiss in the scene?’ ‘Oh yeah, I think we should kiss.’ It was my first love scene ever.”

Gershon appeared on WWHL with Borderlands co-star Cate Blanchett to promote their new video game movie, which premiered Friday in theaters. The Eli Roth-helmed adaptation also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt and more.

Meanwhile, Cruise is planning to appear at Sunday’s closing ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he will reportedly do a live stunt as the Olympic flag is handed over to 2028 Summer Olympics host city Los Angeles.
