After releasing on Tuesday, the trailer has amassed a mindblowing 180 million views, with 177 million of them coming in just 48 hours. That makes it the biggest Paramount trailer ever. The Gladiator II trailer trended highest on Twitter and peaked at two on Google’s U.S. Daily Search Trend list.

For comparison, the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick got 75 million views in 48 hours. That film went on to gross a three-day U.S. box office opening of $126.7 million.

This bodes well for Ridley Scott’s sequel to 2000’s Gladiator. The original opened to $34.8M during the first weekend, and went on to earn $465.3M globally. Gladiator wasn’t just a commercial hit, but a critical one two, bagging five Oscars, including Best Picture.

In Gladiator II, Maximus’ son Lucius (Mescal) enters the Colosseum to revolt against tyrannical Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), who threaten all of Rome. Pedro Pascal stars as Marcus Acacius, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, and Denzel Washington as Macrinus.

Gladiator II releases in cinemas 15 November 2024. Watch the epic first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II here.
