'Glass' trailer pits supervillains Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy against heroic Bruce Willis
Even though M. Night Shyamalan made his name with The Sixth Sense’s memorable twist ending, the big reveal at the end of 2017’s Split — namely, that it was a covert sequel to 2000’s Unbreakable — nonetheless took audiences by thrilled surprise. We’ll have to wait until January to see if the filmmaker is capable of once again blindsiding fans with what will be the third entry in his superhero series, Glass. But a new trailer for the film certainly indicates that the sequel is hiding a bombshell or two.
Taking place in the recent aftermath of Split, Glass will focus on indestructible empath David Dunn (Bruce Willis), now dubbed “the Overseer,” and his fragile nemesis Elijah Price, aka “Mr. Glass” (Samuel L. Jackson), as well as multiple-personality-plagued Kevin Wendall Crumb (James McAvoy), aka “the Horde,” who has the ability to transform into the monstrous Beast.
Even more than its initial trailer, this latest promo indicates that Mr. Glass is the one deviously orchestrating events, manipulating his incarceration at a psychiatric hospital alongside Dunn and Crumb to initiate a battle between good and evil. That conflict will rage both inside and outside the facility run by Sarah Paulson’s Dr. Ellie Staple and will eventually involve Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casey Cooke, the only female survivor from Split. It’ll also feature Mr. Glass’s mom, played by Charlayne Woodard — or so the filmmakers promise.
Glass arrives in theaters on Jan. 18, 2019.
