Glen Powell Almost Played Josh Hartnett’s Role in Oppenheimer
Glen Powell is one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars thanks to his breakout roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You. Yet, Powell hasn’t landed every part he wanted, as the actor lost out on a role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Who Did Glen Powell Nearly Play in Oppenheimer?
In an interview with GQ, Powell revealed he missed out “by a slim margin” on the role of Ernest Lawrence, the nuclear physicist who worked with Oppenheimer at Berkeley. Ultimately, the role went to Josh Hartnett. However, Powell is still in touch with Nolan and has “faith that they’ll get to do something together soon.”
Powell and Nolan previously worked together on The Dark Knight Rises. Powell played the trader who interacted with Bane in the Gotham Stock Market. Bane smashes the trader’s head into a keyboard, knocking him out cold.
Powell is set to have another big summer with starring roles in Hit Man and Twisters. In Hit Man, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a lowly college professor who poses as an undercover hitman for the police department. Powell produced Hit Man and co-wrote the script with director Richard Linklater. Hit Man streams to Netflix on June 7, 2024.
One month later, Powell will be entering Tornado Alley in Twisters. In the standalone sequel to Twister, Powell plays Tyler Owens, a cocky and reckless storm chaser who finds himself in the fight of his life as multiple twisters hit Oklahoma. Powell stars alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, and David Corenswet. Twisters races into theaters on July 19, 2024.
