Glenn Close has 'gone without an Oscar for 40 years.' Could 'Hillbilly Elegy' change that?

Could this finally be Glenn Close's year at the Oscars?

The actress, who turns 74 on Friday, nabbed her eighth Academy Awards nomination Monday for her lead role in director Ron Howard's "Hillbilly Elegy." But for all the awards attention, Close has never taken home an Oscar.

"I’ve gone without an Oscar for 40 years," she told USA TODAY in November. "I was thrown by reading something that somebody wrote about how if I got it, it would be a consolation prize, which really kind of (ticked) me off. It was ignorant and I found it insulting actually about the craft of acting."

"Hillbilly Elegy," a family drama based on J.D. Vance’s 2016 memoir about his Appalachian family, has garnered mixed reactions. USA TODAY film critic Brian Truitt singled out Close's compelling performance, but noted the lackluster narrative made for a "middling dysfunctional family drama with A-list actresses."

Even award shows can't seem to figure out how they feel about it. Close was also nominated for a Razzie for her performance in the film, making her only the third actor to receive an Oscar and a Razzie for the same role. Amy Irving (1983's "Yentl") and James Coco (1981's "Only When I Laugh") previously found themselves in similar scenarios.

"It might not be bad to keep the record going," Close joked to USA TODAY about potentially losing an eighth time. "You can always roll me out in a wheelchair. That would be a consolation prize!"

This year also marks another matchup for Close against fellow best supporting actress nominee Olivia Colman ("The Father"). The two previously went head-to-head in 2019 under the best actress category: Close for "The Wife" and Colman for "The Favourite." The latter star walked away with a trophy and a memorable acceptance speech, which she dedicated to Close.

Close has also previously received Oscars nominations for best supporting actress in "The World According to Garp" (1983), "The Big Chill" (1984) and "The Natural" (1985) and best actress in "Fatal Attraction" (1988), "Dangerous Liaisons" (1989) and "Albert Nobbs" (2012).

This year, her "Hillbilly" performance got a Golden Globes nomination, the award for which ultimately went to Jodie Foster for "The Mauritanian."
