Gold medal Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller spoke out against Larry Nassar on ‘Today’
Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller spoke out against convicted sex abuser Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor, and the issues surrounding the organization on Today. Miller led the team dubbed the Magnificent Seven to gold during the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
After listening to one gymnast after another give victim statements during Nassar’s ongoing sentencing hearing, Miller praised those who came forward with their stories. She said, “I am so in awe of their courage.”
In December, Miller was part of the search team tasked with finding a new CEO for USA Gymnastics. Three of the organization’s 20 board members recently were forced to step down amid the scandal. Despite the resignations, Miller admits, “It’s a good start. It’s something. But it is not enough. Significantly more has to happen.”
Miller said USA Gymnastics — and the sport in general — needs to completely overhaul its past procedures to ensure the safety of the athletes. Miller added, “It’s common sense not to have a male trainer in the room alone with a female of any age.”
