Golden Bachelor’s Theresa Nist Confirms Reason for Gerry Turner Divorce Wasn’t Just About Relocating
Theresa Nist opened up about her divorce from ex-husband Gerry Turner and revealed that their decision to split was due to reasons beyond their inability to relocate and purchase a home together.
“You really can’t know somebody in four weeks. I’ll say that. That’s all I can say,” the Golden Bachelor winner, 71, told Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti during her “Almost Famous” podcast appearance on Tuesday, November 5.
After teasing that there were more problems in the marriage than they led on, Theresa said that she didn’t “want to say any more than that.”
“It’s not something I want to discuss at this point. It’s not just the location thing. That’s all I’ll say,” the senior compliance & operations liaison revealed.
Theresa and Gerry, 72, became the first couple of the Golden Bachelor franchise during season 1 in 2023. The pair quickly tied the knot after their engagement aired, during a televised wedding in January. During the podcast episode, Theresa revealed that there “was a time constraint on the offer” for their lavish wedding in Palm Springs, California.
“They weren’t offering [the wedding] later. It was now. And we said, ‘If we really are going to get married, we should do it because we’re going to get the wedding of our dreams,’” Teresa explained to Ben, 35, and Ashley, 36. “We are older, why waste any time? Do it now.”
At a different point in the discussion, Theresa shed more light on her problems with Gerry after they said “I Do,” like his indecisiveness to move in together. The couple were once excited to live in the same state after deciding that Gerry would move from Indiana to Charleston, South Carolina, and Theresa would join him from New Jersey. However, the entrepreneur seemingly had trouble letting go of the lake house he purchased in 2020 after his late wife Toni died.
“I wasn’t ready to sell my home until we found a home. We never got to the point where we found a home,” Theresa admitted. “Gerry came up with the idea of doing six weeks there and six weeks here.”
However, that wasn’t what Theresa had planned for their future since she “truly wanted to have [their] home together.”
“I was willing to move. I wanted to have our big home where our family could come visit us,” she continued. “I didn’t want to go back and forth to our homes.”
Theresa and Gerry made a massive announcement in April when they decided to divorce three months after they vowed to spend forever together. The couple broke the news to fans during a sit-down interview with host Juju Chang on Good Morning America.
“We’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage,” Gerry said at the time, later adding, “The thing that strikes me the most and in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us are to our families. So, we look at these situations and I think we just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart.”
