Golden Globe odds update: ‘Hacks’ overtakes ‘The Bear’ in top comedy race
One month after “Hacks” surprised awards pundits everywhere by winning the Best Comedy Series trophy at the Emmys over “The Bear,” the Max laffer has now officially overtaken the FX cooking show in our Golden Globe odds.
The third season of “Hacks” currently enjoys 37/10 odds to win Best Comedy Series at the Globes, compared to the third season of “The Bear’s” second-place odds of 4/1. The former followed Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) journey of trying to become the first female late-night host, while the latter focused on the opening of Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) fine dining restaurant in Chicago.

These two front-runners are followed in our Golden Globe predictions by “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 at 5/1 odds, “Abbott Elementary” Season 4 at 6/1 odds, “Shrinking” Season 2 at 9/1 odds, and “Palm Royale” Season 1 at 16/1 odds.
Out of Gold Derby’s 13 Globe Experts from major media outlets, the following 10 have “Hacks” in their #1 positions: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Debra Birnbaum (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly), Peter Travers (ABC), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby).
Looking back through recent Golden Globes history, “Hacks” won the top prize of 2021 for its debut season, while “The Bear” prevailed for its second outing in 2023. Interestingly enough, the only time these two shows competed against each other at this organization was for 2022, when Season 1 of “The Bear” and Season 2 of “Hacks” both lost to the first year of “Abbott Elementary.”
One interesting fact to bring up is that the Golden Globes don’t repeat nearly as much as their fellow TV awards shows like the Emmys and Screen Actors Guild. The last time the Globes repeated in the comedy category was for “Glee” in 2009 and 2010. Not even beloved programs like “30 Rock” and “Modern Family” could claim this race twice, and “Veep” never won it at all. Could that be good news for our third-place contender, “Only Murders in the Building”?
The 82nd annual Golden Globes are scheduled for January 5, 2025 and will be hosted by Nikki Glaser. This event honors the best in TV and film for the 2024 calendar year. Make your predictions at Gold Derby right now to let us know what YOU think will win at the Golden Globes.
