Golden Globe predictions: ‘Shōgun’ out front in 3 top categories
Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race (where Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tokuma Nishioka, Moeka Hoshi, Fumi Nikaido, and Yuka Kouri are all contenders), it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.

For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that, there was “Homeland” in 2012, “The Sopranos” in 1999, and “The X-Files” in 1996. See the detailed list below.

“Shōgun” made history at the Emmys last month by winning a whopping 18 trophies, more than any other program ever in a single year. (To compare, the show it dethroned was “John Adams” at 13 wins.) “Shōgun’s” 18 triumphs were for drama series, lead actor (Sanada), lead actress (Sawai), directing (Frederick E. O. Toye), guest actor (Nestor Carbonell), casting, cinematography, costumes, hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic makeup, prosthetic makeup, picture editing, production design, sound editing, sound mixing, stunt performance, and visual effects.
At the upcoming Golden Globes, “Shōgun’s” likely co-nominees in Best Drama Series are “Slow Horses,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “House of the Dragon,” “Presumed Innocent,” and “Squid Game.” Sanada’s category rivals in Best Drama Actor look to be Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”), Jake Gyllenhaal (“Presumed Innocent”), Donald Glover (Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”), and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”). And Sawai is expected to face off in Best Drama Actress against Maya Erskine (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), and Kathy Bates (“Matlock”).
Here are the five times throughout Golden Globes history that a drama won the three top trophies for series, actor and actress:
2023: “Succession” and leads Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus Matthew Macfadyen
2020: “The Crown” and leads Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin
2012: “Homeland” and leads Damian Lewis and Claire Danes
1999: “The Sopranos” and leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco
1996: “The X-Files” and leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson
