Golden Globes 2018: Edgar Wright discusses Ansel Elgort doing doughnuts in 'Baby Driver' car
Edgar Wright wasn’t nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes for his rock ’n’ roll heist film, Baby Driver, which many critics undoubtedly felt was a not-inconsiderable snub. Nonetheless, the acclaimed British filmmaker was on hand at this year’s awards to show support for his leading man, Ansel Elgort, who was up for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. And when we caught up with him at the festivities, he gave us the lowdown on his young star’s latest caught-on-video automotive stunt.
Last week, as a winter storm raged on the East Coast, Elgort posted a video on Twitter that showed him doing doughnuts in the snow in a red vehicle that looked extremely similar to the one he operates in Baby Driver. As Wright told our own Kevin Polowy on the red carpet at this Sunday’s Globes, Elgort’s ride was actually one of the six cars used for the film, which Elgort was able to acquire after some diligent pestering of the production company. The fact that Elgort has some real behind-the-wheel skills was no surprise to the filmmaker, however, since he says he was confident from the get-go that Elgort was the right man to play Baby in his star-studded crime-musical hit.

While Elgort didn’t ultimately snag Globes gold, losing out in his category to The Disaster Artist’s James Franco, his director had nothing but glowing things to say about his performance in Baby Driver. To hear Wright’s complete comments, check out our video interview above.
