The 'Good Boys' cast's advice for young viewers who want to check out their F-bomb-heavy, R-rated movie
When is a movie starring kids not a kids movie? When that movie is Good Boys, an R-rated comedy about a trio of 12-year-olds who get up to all kinds of bad behavior, from swearing and drinking to crashing drones and racing across busy highways. And the young stars of Good Boys — Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon and Keith L. Williams — would be the first to tell kids not to see the film without their parents’ permission. “Let your parents watch it first,” Tremblay, the young star of such hits as Room and Wonder, tells Yahoo Entertainment. Noon agrees with that advice. “Have your parents watch it first, and then they can decide. Or if you’re mature enough, say you’re like 17 or 16, you can go with your parent. I feel like that would be OK.”
It goes without saying that the three actors had to secure their parents’ permission before they signed on to star in the movie, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg — the duo behind such raunchy comedies as Superbad and This is the End. “When I read [the script], I was a little hesitant at first,” Williams admits. “I didn’t want to do it because of the cussing and stuff. My mom was onboard and she really motivated me to do it. She was like, ‘It’s just acting.’”
Tremblay says that reading the script was a family affair in his household as well. “The first swear word was around the first page,” he remembers. “Me and my parents were like, ‘That’s one.’ Later in the script, of course, we were like, ‘OK, that’s 365!’ But [we] were just laughing the whole time. It was a really, really funny script.” It was even funnier when Tremblay showed up on set to deliver those swear words in person. “For the first couple of swears, I was like, ‘I said that word!’” Good thing he didn’t have to worry about any swear jars.
