Grace Van Patten Opens Up About Dating ‘Tell Me Lies’ Co-Star Jackson White

They have quite the tumultuous (read: toxic) relationship on screen, but off-screen, things could not be more different for Tell Me Lies co-stars Jackson White and Grace Van Patten, the latter who just opened up about the reality of dating her co-star.
Grace and Jackson play the lead roles in Hulu’s adaptation of Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name. Set over an eight-year time period, Tell Me Lies explores the relationship between Baird college freshmen Lucy (Van Patten) and college junior Stephen (White).
In case ya didn’t know, season 2 is dropping weekly on Hulu. And on the recent Emmy Awards red carpet over the weekend (September 15), Grace opened up about what it’s really like working with your partner.
She told E! News their relationship in real life is very different to that of Lucy and Stephen’s.
“Because we established that dynamic first season, the second season was a lot easier to switch on and off,” she revealed. “And we’re so different from these characters, so it’s honestly just an opportunity to get all of our bad feelings out so that there's none left by the time we go home.”
Grace also joked that Jackson is incredibly good at playing the part of Stephen, which, according to her, is “a little concerning, but he’s just a very good actor.”
FYI, the couple met and began dating during the audition process for Tell Me Lies season 1, which began production in 2022. Oh, and Jackson has *also* spoken out about how their relationship impacts their roles, telling Decider ahead of the release of season 2 it’s helped them to feel more comfortable in their parts.
“As for the relationship influencing the role—it helps because you’re so comfortable with someone. So you can go and feel free to try stuff and there’s not a politeness to it. It’s just very all out there,” he told the publication.
The actor also very sweetly added that working with Grace is “the best,” as she is “amazing. She’s so grounded, and generous, and just soulful and fucking—yeah she’s great.”
