Gracie Abrams gives backstory on Taylor Swift apartment fire: 'She really snapped into action'
Gracie Abrams is recalling the fire that happened at Taylor Swift's apartment.
While appearing on TODAY June 28, Abrams recalled the whole incident occurred after she went out to dinner with Swift earlier that night.
"We drank a lot. We were talking about our lives and our albums and got really excited about all of these stories. She was like, 'We have to go home and listen to the songs,'" Abrams explained. "She played me 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.' I end up on the floor. That's how that went and then we went home and wrote 'Us' based kind of off the conversation that we had at dinner."
The "I miss you, I'm sorry," singer noted that the fire then happened in Swift's kitchen and Abrams was really impressed by how Swift quickly lept into action. The "Karma" singer took out the flames after Abrams told her not to pour water on it.
In a video Abrams shared on Instagram June 21, you can see Swift using a fire extinguisher to take out the growing flames.
"She really snapped into action," Abrams said on TODAY.
When asked how she knew not to pour water on it, Abrams said she learned from experience.
"It's an oil fire," she said. "So, honestly, this is a really good PSA for anyone and everyone watching. If your candle explodes, if you put water on it, because I did this at my house with a much smaller candle ... I poured a cup of water and it was like, the biggest flame. It's so scary. Just don't do it."
In the Instagram video, the two were also seen breaking out into laughter after they put out the fire, causing smoke to fill the room.
“Our purses are ruined. And my shoes. And the whole room, I think," Swift said in the video with a laugh.
Abrams jokingly responded, “It smells really good, though.”
The “Close to You” singer captioned the video: “Writing this entire song from 2am to 6am was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. @taylorswift now we know how to use a fire extinguisher. I love you."
