Grammys 2024: Shankar Mahadevan & Zakir Hussain’s Shakti’s first studio album won
Shakti’s “This Moment” album, released in June 2023, marks a significant milestone for the band, as it is their first studio album in over 45 years. The group comprises of founding member and guitarist John McLaughlin, percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan. Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain have also received critical acclaim for their exceptional musical collaboration.

During the Grammy Awards ceremony, Shankar Mahadevan, joined by Rajagopalan and Selvaganesh, took to the stage to express gratitude and extend a special shout-out to McLaughlin and Hussain. Dedicating the victory to his wife Sangeeta, Mahadevan said, “We miss you John ji. Zakir Hussain, he just had another Grammy today. Thank you boys, God, family, friends, and India. We are proud of you, India.”
Moreover, Rajagopalan seized the moment to appreciate the Recording Academy for its esteemed recognition.
The evening turned out even more splendid for Zakir Hussain, who not only contributed to Shakti’s success but also secured two additional Grammys. His stellar performance in “Pashto” earned him the title of the Best Global Music Performance. At the same time, the collaborative effort in “As We Speak” with American musicians Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer secured the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
