Grammy nominee Lewis Capaldi says he was mistaken for a seat filler at award ceremony
Rising star Lewis Capaldi’s night at the Grammys — as a first-time nominee, no less — was memorable, but not for the reason you might think.
At one point, the “Someone You Loved” artist was mistaken for a seat filler, one of the regular people who make sure the camera always falls on a full audience. At least he had a good sense of humor about it, sharing it on Twitter with several of those emojis that mean someone is laughing until they cry.
A lady at the grammys has just come up and offered to take my seat because she thought I was one of the people who sits in the chairs to fill them when someone gets up to use the bathroom 😂😂😂😂😂😂 #GRAMMYs

Capaldi was actually one of the artists nominated in the Song of the Year category for the creators of a track. His song about heartbreak, which was a worldwide hit, lost to Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy.”
He was in good company. Eilish’s addictive ditty also beat out: Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”; Taylor Swift’s “Lover”; Tanya Tucker’s “Bring My Flowers Now”; H.E.R.’s “Hard Place”; Lady Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way”; and Lana Del Rey’s “Norman F***ing Rockwell.” In fact, Eilish and her entire debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, had a big night, taking home five awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.
Capaldi was honored in another way, though. At the top of the show, host Alicia Keys used the tune of his song while riffing on the year in music. He seemed to enjoy that moment, too.
Capaldi, 23, headed into Grammys weekend with a laid back attitude, and he said he never expected to win.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” the Scottish singer/songwriter told People at a pre-Grammys bash. “I’ve eaten a lot of food and drunk a lot of alcohol. I’m just out here enjoying it because I’ll probably never be nominated for a Grammy again. I might as well have fun while I’m here.”
And make no mistake, he did have fun, judging by this clip that surfaced on social media, which shows him being serenaded by fellow nominees Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes.
