EXCLUSIVE: Superbad filmmaker Greg Mottola has been tapped to direct the first two episodes of Peacock comedy series The Miniature Wife, from Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res (The Morning Show, Pachinko). Mottola also will serve as executive producer on the series.

Starring and executive produced by Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen, The Miniature Wife, based on the short story by Manuel Gonzalez, is a high-concept marital comedy examining the power (im)balances between spouses Lindy (Banks) and Les (Macfadyen), after a technological accident induces the ultimate relationship crisis.

Created and executive produced by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner (Boardwalk Empire, Goliath), who also serve as showrunners, The Miniature Wife landed at Peacock with a straight-to-series order earlier this year.

“I’m thrilled to be part of a project of this caliber,” said Mottola. “Jennifer and Steve have hilariously expanded upon Manuel Gonzalez’s fantastical acid tale of marital discord. Media Res and Peacock are the perfect home for this project and I couldn’t be more excited to work with Elizabeth and Matthew, both of whom I’ve admired for a very long time.”

Ames and Turner will serve as creators, showrunners and executive producers for the series, with Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive producing for Media Res, along with Mottola.

Mottola most recently directed two episodes of DC/Max’s Peacemaker and the first two episodes of Netflix’s comedy series Nobody Wants This, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. His television credits also include directing and executive producing the pilot of FX’s Dave, directing episodes of Arrested Development, The Comeback, Undeclared, The Dangerous Book for Boys and the pilot of HBO’s The Newsroom, the latter earning him a DGA Award nomination. Mottola is repped by UTA.
