Greta Thunberg fights back tears while recalling emotional battle against Trump
Greta Thunberg was brought to tears recalling her public battles with former President Donald Trump over climate change. Thursday's PBS special Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World, documented her environmental activism and revealed the emotional hardship of her crusade. While Trump repeatedly has mocked her for being outspoken, Thunberg believes that caring is her greatest asset.
"I'm very emotional, I'm very small, and I'm very weak in a way," Thunberg said. "That's something I'm very proud of."
She recalled her time at the World Economic Forum in January 2020 and the dismissive speech that Trump delivered. In the speech, Trump referred to Thunberg and other environmental activists as "perennial prophets of doom." Thunberg still doesn't understand the vitriol towards people trying to make the planet more habitable for future generations.
"If you feel bad today, so many people are so sad and so depressed but that's a good thing because that means they still have empathy and they don't want to live in this world where we have lost empathy," Thunberg said while fighting back tears. "So many people come up to me and say they believe that there's something wrong with them because they are feeling like s***. But I think it's the opposite. It's the rest who can maintain living in this society where we only care about prestige, and these are shallow things that don't matter, and being the best and so on. Those are the people who are not normal."
Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World, aired as a three-part documentary starting at 8 p.m. on PBS.
