She’s whipped out a couple of super emotional performances of her breakup anthem “Used to Love You” lately, but Gwen Stefani says she’s in a good place about her divorce at the moment.
“When I wrote the song, I was sorta in a phase of forgiveness,” Stefani told Elvis Duran during an interview on his radio show Thursday. “In a way, I’m getting to this point now, and all the songs up to that point were like, ‘Rah, I’m like so upset and so crazy.'”
Stefani, 46, filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Gavin Rossdale, in August. It has been reported that she discovered he was cheating with their nanny thanks to an iCloud sync issue.
“Everybody knows, pretty much, what happened to me,” Stefani told Duran. “I got a divorce, which completely was not in the plan at all. For me, it surely wasn’t and [it was] a shock and horrible, a crazy explosion in my life.”
In October, just before she released “Used to Love You,” Stefani told Yahoo, “What’s so cool about right now is that I feel, like, weirdly with Tragic Kingdom, I feel like I’m almost in the exact same place that I was.”
Stefani wrote much of Tragic Kingdom, No Doubt’s big breakthrough album, after her breakup with bandmate Tony Kanal.
As for why people are connecting with “Used to Love You”: “If you tell the truth and you’re just honest, people pick up on that,” Stefani said.
“I think the good thing is that something good is coming out of something horrible,” she added.
