Gwyneth Paltrow called 'shamelessly out of touch' after taking credit for popularizing yoga
You’re not going to believe this: Gwyneth Paltrow said something that is not going over well.
The Oscar-winning actress has a history of raising eyebrows with her comments — and she’s back at it.
This time, it is Paltrow’s comments in the new issue of Wall Street Journal Magazine, in which she seems to take credit for the popularity of yoga.
“Forgive me if this comes out wrong,” Paltrow told the magazine, “but I went to do a yoga class in L.A. recently and the 22-year-old girl behind the counter was like, ‘Have you ever done yoga before?’ And literally I turned to my friend, and I was like, ‘You have this job because I’ve done yoga before.'”
In other parts of the piece, Paltrow gave some context, speaking about dealing with the backlash aimed at her lifestyle brand. Goop, which she created in 2008, is known for pushing products and practices that are both much revered and often dismissed as effective treatments.
“We’re trailblazers,” Paltrow said. “We’re going to write about s**** that people haven’t heard of. … I’m so happy to suffer those slings and arrows, because if you look at the culture from then to now, people are so curious. It’s so beautiful to see people feeling empowered by natural solutions or ancient modalities alongside science and medicine.”
The Iron Man star said her interest in health was sparked by her late father’s throat cancer diagnosis in 1998. It was then that she latched on to the idea of wellness and sought a way to control her health by doing, among other things, the practice that has been traced back to ancient India.

“I remember when I started doing yoga and people were like, ‘What is yoga? She’s a witch. She’s a freak.'”
While yoga’s popularity in the United States in recent years has continued to rise, the idea that Paltrow — one of many celebrities known to strike a downward-facing dog pose — was responsible set Twitter ablaze.

Dear Gwyneth Paltrow, You have a “job” because certain brown people invented yoga thousands of years ago. Very Truly Yours, Certain Brown People@GwynethPaltrow

By far the best part about this profile is the studio receptionist who asks actual real life Gwyneth Paltrow if she’s ever done yoga before https://t.co/OuBw6UEYwh pic.twitter.com/nGZyKBzN97

Gwyneth Paltrow is so shamelessly out of touch that she is endlessly fascinating to me. I want to put her in a museum. I want to read a case study on her. I want to take all her money for like 2 hours and see if she can figure out how to cross a street without hiring a driver. pic.twitter.com/KgYuGTOGo6

Expect this to be remembered nearly as much as her use of the term “conscious uncoupling.”
