‘Hacks’ vs. ‘The Bear’ rematch set for 2025 Golden Globes
It was the awards shot heard ’round the world. “Hacks” beat “The Bear” at the 2024 Emmys for Best Comedy Series, despite the FX cooking comedy being heavily favorited by pundits and earning a new record for the most wins (11) by a comedy program in a single year. Now, all eyes are on the “Hacks” vs. “The Bear” rematch at the 2025 Golden Globes where, unsurprisingly, the two shows are at the top of our racetrack odds.
“The Bear” is currently out front to win Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globes with leading 37/10 odds, though Max’s “Hacks” has been gaining on it ever since the Emmys upheaval; it now enjoys odds of 19/5. These two front-runners are followed in descending order by “Only Murders in the Building” at 5/1 odds, “Abbott Elementary” at 6/1 odds, “Shrinking” at 19/2 odds, and “Palm Royale” at 13/1 odds.

Looking back through recent Golden Globes history, “Hacks” won the top prize of 2021 for its debut season, while “The Bear” prevailed for its second outing in 2023. Interestingly enough, the only time the two laffers competed against each other at this organization was for 2022, when Season 1 of “The Bear” and Season 2 of “Hacks” both lost to the first year of “Abbott Elementary.”
Since this awards group adheres to calendar-year eligibility, that means “Hacks” and “The Bear” are now both up for their third seasons. The former followed Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) journey of trying to become the first female late-night host, while the latter focused on the opening of Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) fine dining restaurant in Chicago.
So which series has the edge at the upcoming Golden Globes? If we go by Metacritic, a website that aggregates TV reviews, Season 3 of “Hacks” earned a 90 score (its best ever), and Season 3 of “The Bear” received an 80 score (its worst ever). In terms of audience tastes at Rotten Tomatoes, “Hacks” came in with an impressive 91%, while “The Bear” had to make due with just 51%.
Even though “Hacks” has the edge on paper, it’s still possible both it and “The Bear” could lose Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globes, just as they did in 2022. In fact, these kudos don’t repeat nearly as much as their fellow TV awards shows like the Emmys and Screen Actors Guild. The last time the Globes repeated in the comedy category was for “Glee” in 2009 and 2010. Not even beloved programs like “30 Rock” and “Modern Family” could claim this race twice, and “Veep” never won it at all. Could that be good news for our third-place contender, “Only Murders in the Building”? Stay tuned.
The 82nd annual Golden Globes are scheduled for January 5, 2025 and will be hosted by Nikki Glaser. This event honors the best in TV and film for the 2024 calendar year. Make your predictions at Gold Derby right now to let us know what YOU think will win at the Golden Globes.
