Halle Berry Says She’d Reprise Role As Catwoman, But “We’d Make Some Changes”
Halle Berry has had much conversation surrounding her Catwoman role, as its been 20 years since its release.
Most recently, the Hollywood star sat with Andy Cohen for his self-titled Live Sirius XM show, where she revealed if she’d ever reprise her role as Patience Phillips: a cosmetics company employee who dies and is reborn as the superhuman feline.
“You are ageless. You are timeless and that makes me think we need a Catwoman movie,” Cohen began. “Would you ever? If they said, ‘We are gonna blow this out and we want you to be Catwoman again,’ would you do it?” In response, the 58-year-old beauty said, “I love Catwoman. I do. Yeah. You know, we’d make some changes, but yeah. I love Catwoman. Very close to my heart.”
Amid the film’s 20th anniversary, Berry found a philanthropic way to honor her role while also keeping it spicy.
The Oscar-winner — who surprisingly won zero positive awards for the comic book adaptation — shared a carousel of photos on Instagram back in July, posing in just bikini bottoms and surrounded by rescue cats.
“And STILL… meow!” she captioned the post. “It’s been 20 years today since I had the honor of bringing this iconic character to life. She will always be close to my heart and I will forever be Patience Phillips aka CATWOMAN!”
She added, “Thank you @missjee79! When these black beauties showed up in my yard searching for their mother, Jee helped us through the rescue process. Forever grateful!”
Berry, who currently stars in the new film Never Let Go, spoke with Entertainment Weekly in the same month about the lackluster response to the reimagined comic book film.
“I felt like it was Halle Berry’s failure, but I didn’t make it alone,” she told the outlet. “All these years, I’ve absolutely carried it. I didn’t love [the backlash]. Being a Black woman, I’m used to carrying negativity on my back, fighting, being a fish swimming upstream by myself. I’m used to defying stereotypes and making a way out of no way.”
Per the Box Office, the 2004 film wasn’t much of a success as it only grossed $82,078,046 worldwide and actually won a series of “Worst” awards. “It didn’t derail me,” she added. “A little bad publicity about a movie? I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t going to stop my world or derail me from doing what I love to do. I hated that it got all put on me, and I hate that, to this day, it’s my failure.”
Berry also shared her initial thoughts on receiving the script, which she felt overwhelmed by.
“I always thought the idea of Catwoman saving women from a face cream felt a bit soft,” she admitted. “All the other superheroes save the world; they don’t just save women from cracked faces. I always knew that was a soft superhero plight, but at that time in my career, I didn’t have the agency I have today or belief that I could challenge that, so I went along with it.”
Berry’s new film Never Let Go is much different from the DC flick, as she plays a mother of two sons (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins), who “has never gone beyond their forested environs, and whenever they leave the cabin, they are bounded by rope as they venture into the scary woods.”
See the trailer below. The film hits theaters this Friday (Sept. 20).
