Halsey Revives Elizabeth Hurley’s 1990s Versace Couture Dress for MTV VMAs 2024 Red Carpet
Halsey dug deep into the archives for their look on Wednesday in New York at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The artist and About-Face beauty founder arrived at this year’s installment of the VMAs wearing a dress from Versace’s fall 1996 couture collection.
Halsey paired the Swarovski-beaded silk chiffon gown, designed by Gianni Versace, with matching burgundy nail art, drop chain-link earrings and burnished rings. They completed the look with a taupe lip — similar to the one Elizabeth Hurley famously wore with the same dress back in 1996, when the model and actor wore the sleeveless gown to the grand opening party of Versace’s Fifth Avenue boutique in New York City.

Halsey nodded to the origin of their Versace dress, telling MTV on the red carpet, “This dress was a miracle to find. This was designed by Gianni Versace for Elizabeth Hurley in 1996,” Halsey shared, adding, “it hasn’t been worn by anybody else until now, and I’m loving it.”
Halsey’s VMAs dress was sourced at the showroom of Janet Mandell by stylist Lyn Alyson. “The dress was actually on Lyn’s original VMAs mood board,” Alyson’s NYC assistant Dominic Turiczek — who worked alongside Kelly Goldy-Brown and Jenny Battye and tailor Miguel Pena — tells WWD, adding, “and when we were at Janet Mandell’s shop, she saw the mood board and gasped, exclaiming she had it in LA.”
This isn’t the first time Halsey has worn Versace on the red carpet to an awards show. In 2017, Halsey accepted the award for dance song of the year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards along with the Chainsmokers for their collaborative track “Closer,” while wearing a runway look from Versus Versace’s spring 2017 collection.
Halsey is one of the performers this year at the VMAs, which will also include sets Anitta (feat. Fat Joe, DJ Khaled + Tiago PZK), Benson Boone, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, Doechii, Eminem, GloRilla, KAROL G, Katy Perry — who is receiving the Video Vanguard Award — Lenny Kravitz (with Quavo), LISA, LL COOL J, Megan Thee Stallion, Rauw Alejandro, Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes, Le Sserafim during the pre-show, and Jessie Murph and Teddy Swims on the Extended Play stage.
This October 25th, Halsey is set to release their fifth studio album “The Great Impersonator.”
