'Hamilton' star Leslie Odom Jr. reminds Americans to 'Wait for It' when it comes to election results
Leslie Odom Jr., famous for his Tony Award-winning turn as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, is reprising one of his songs from the Broadway smash for Election Day.
The new version of “Wait for It” — about Burr longing for recognition — reminds Americans to be patient awaiting the results of a campaign that has both divided the country and driven people to the polls in record numbers, even before Nov. 3.
“Look, this is pretty clear. Every American who voted deserves to have their voice heard,” Odom said. “In this historic election, millions of you mailed your ballots or dropped them off — and all of you deserve to be counted. It may take time, but your vote is worth waiting for. And I’m willing to wait for it.” He reminds viewers that the votes we’re waiting for are coming from grandparents with COVID-19, members of the military stationed overseas, teachers, neighbors and friends.
The moving clip cuts between Odom singing solo in a dark space and the faces of voters — families on their porch, a policeman in uniform, healthcare workers in scrubs and excited children. They’re waving American flags and holding up signs that echo Odom’s message.
The pro-voting PSA was produced by RepresentUs, an organization that describes itself as bringing together political conservatives, progressives and others to “fix our broken elections and stop political bribery.” Actors Jennifer Lawrence and Ed Helms are two familiar names on the list of board members.
The message comes amid speculation that results of the 2020 election could take longer than usual, because of more absentee ballots being cast during the coronavirus pandemic.
