Hannah Einbinder (‘Hacks’) still leads Emmy odds despite going up against Hollywood royalty
It’s kind of remarkable to have Hollywood legends Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett both nominated in the same category at the Emmys,. It’s even more remarkable, then, that neither is the front-runner to win it. In the race for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”) gets leading 71/20 odds of winning. This would be her first victory on her third nomination.

At the moment Einbinder is predicted to win by 12 out of 17 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, 10 out of 11 Gold Derby Editors, 19 of our Top 24 Users and 20 of our All-Star Top 24. She first competed for this award in 2021, but lost out to Hannah Waddingham for the first season of “Ted Lasso.” Both Hannahs were nominated again in 2022, but both of them were bested by Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) in a major upset. Now Einbinder and Ralph are up against Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), Burnett (“Palm Royale”), Liza Colon-Zayas (“The Bear”) and Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”).
More from GoldDerby
Einbinder’s greatest threat appears to be Streep, who already won a Critics Choice Award for her performance in the third season of “Only Murders.” Betting on her are four Experts, one Editor, two Top Users and three All-Stars. You might think it odd for anyone to bet against Streep, who is already a three-time Emmy winner. But she has proved vulnerable for this role, losing the Golden Globe to Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and missing out on an individual acting nom entirely at the SAG Awards.
Colon-Zayas could also surprise. She ranks third in our predictions with support from one Expert and one Top User. She has the benefit of starring in the front-runner for Best Comedy Series, which also happens to have set a new record for the most comedy nominations in a single season (23). She could go along for the ride if “The Bear” sweeps. Then there’s Ralph, who we may be underestimating — again. She’s in fourth place in our odds, but that’s exactly where she was two years ago when she won the last time; one of our Top Users says she’ll repeat, and the rest of us will be kicking ourselves if they’re right.
None of our elite pundits are currently predicting Burnett, but we may be underestimating her too. Not only is she beloved, she’s also on a series with lots of industry support. “Palm Royale” exceeded expectations in many ways, earning 11 total noms including Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress (Kristen Wiig). And Burnett hasn’t won an acting Emmy since 1997 for a guest spot on “Mad About You,” so she’s due. Rounding out the category is James, the kind of scene-stealer voters used to love (consider Megan Mullally for “Will and Grace,” or Jane Lynch for “Glee”), but she’s been an underdog ever since her co-star Ralph bested her in 2022.
But Einbinder isn’t a lock, and you could make a case for anyone in this category from top to bottom. So watch out for a potential surprise from the mercurial TV academy.
