Hans Zimmer Is Retiring From Composing Superhero Movie Scores

Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s most successful and popular composers. A collaborator with directors Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder, Zimmer told the BBC’s HARDtalk that he will no longer be writing scores for superhero movies. “I have officially retired from the superhero business,” he said. “I did Batman Begins with [Christopher Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight trilogy might be three movies to you — to me it was 11 years of my life.”

It makes sense that Zimmer would want to move on from the cape business, but it’s a shame because his talents have definitely added to the movies he has worked on. The first superhero film score Zimmer composed was Batman Begins in 2005, alongside James Newton Howard. Following that was, of course, The Dark Knight, in 2008, again with Howard. Zimmer wrapped things up with Nolan’s Batman trilogy in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises. Zimmer went from the Dark Knight to the Man of Steel in 2013 and then teamed up with Junkie XL to score Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It should be noted that Zimmer isn’t retiring altogether; the guy still has a bunch of projects to come. Also, his work extends far beyond just comic-book movies. I mean, Inception. Right? Right.
