Happy Birthday, Martin Short!: 10 greatest movies and shows, ranked worst to best
In a career on stage, screen and television that has endured for more than 50 years, writer, actor and comedian Martin Short got his start in a 1972 Canadian production of the stage musical “Godspell” in a cast that included Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Dave Thomas and Gilda Radner, all of whom would work with Short on subsequent projects in the years to come.
Short’s first exposure to American audiences was as a member of the Second City troupe in the sketch show, “SCTV Network 90,” which aired on NBC from 1981-83 and earned Short his first Emmy for writing. There he created such signature Short characters as Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick. He went on to be cast in Season 10 of “Saturday Night Live” (1985-86) along with Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest. Short then began his starring roles in films with 1986’s “?Three Amigos!” alongside Steve Martin and Chevy Chase and proceeded to star in such comedy classics as “Innerspace,” “Mars Attacks!” and “Father of the Bride.”

In between appearances on film and television, Short returned to the stage, earning a Best Actor Tony nomination for leading role in the musical version of “The Goodbye Girl” and in 1999, winning the Tony for his numerous characters in the Broadway revival of “Little Me.” Later, Short returned to TV, this time shining in dramatic roles in such series as “Damages” and “The Morning Show,” both of which brought him Emmy nominations.
Short’s current project may be among his most successful — producing and starring in the mystery-comedy series “Only Murders in the Building,” for which he has earned four Emmy nominations for its first two seasons. So let’s raise a glass and toast the legend with Happy Birthday wishes by ranking and counting down his 10 greatest film and TV performances from worst to best.
