‘Harry Potter’ Series Has a ‘Succession’ Connection with Mark Mylod Directing
The upcoming “Harry Potter” HBO series has already cast a spell on “Succession” fans.
IndieWire can confirm that the “Harry Potter” show will be executive produced and directed by Mark Mylod, with “Succession,” “His Dark Materials,” and “Killing Eve” scribe Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner and executive producer.

Mylod, whose TV credits also include “Game of Thrones” and “The Last of Us” as well as the feature film “The Menu,” will helm “multiple episodes” of the series, per a press release. The show is currently in development and will be available on Max’s expanding global footprint.
Controversial “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling is also executive producing.
The official series description promises that the show will be a “faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series,” featuring a new cast to lead a “new generation” of fans.
Per the synopsis, “each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” seeming to imply an anthology structure for the show coupled with the Warner Bros. films based on the literary franchise.
The upcoming “Harry Potter” series will be written and executive produced by showrunner Gardiner, with Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Bront? Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
The series is executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Bront? Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
Mylod previously told IndieWire that his directing style for “Succession” and film “The Menu” is not to “fetishize locations and we try not to fetishize the trappings of wealth with the camera.” Now venturing into Hogwarts, it seems Mylod may take the same approach.
“By taking it for granted, then we better reflect the characters and their attitudes towards that world,” Mylod told IndieWire of capturing the elite world of “Succession” onscreen.
Mylod certainly isn’t the first high-brow director to join the “Harry Potter” world: Alfonso Cuarón helmed possibly the most beloved installment of the film series, 2004’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
Original “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe already confirmed that he will not be appearing in the series. Radcliffe told E! News that he doesn’t “think” he will make a cameo on the show.
“Like the rest of the world, [I’m] very excited to watch as an audience member,” Radcliffe said. “I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break, and I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it.”
The show is slated to premiere in 2026.
