‘Haters Back Off’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has opted not to renew comedy series Haters Back Off for a third season.

The streaming service took a swing with Haters Back Off, based on popular YouTube personality Colleen Ballinger’s oddball character Miranda Sings. From the little Netflix viewership data provided by measurement companies, it appears that Haters Back Off got off a solid start last year, earning a second-year renewal, but in the long run, Ballinger’s huge YouTube following did not quite translate into streaming audience for her Netflix series.

It is unclear whether YouTube, which over the last year entered the high-end scripted space with series that often feature popular YouTube personalities, would possibly step in to pick up Haters Back Off.

Haters Back Off, from Brightlight Pictures, delved into the oddball family life of Miranda Sings. An incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise, Sings continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous, it’s just no one knows it yet.

The series starred Ballinger as Miranda Sings, Steve Little as Miranda’s overly confident and utterly misguided Uncle Jim, Angela Kinsey as Miranda’s mom, Bethany, Erik Stocklin, as Miranda’s neighbor and best friend, Patrick, and Francesca Reale as Miranda’s sister, Emily.

Colleen Ballinger, Christopher Ballinger, Perry Rein, Gigi McCreery, Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry served as executive producers.

While Netflix started to cancel series following an early going where virtually every show was getting renewed, the Internet network’s batting average remains high. The vast majority of its shows go to a second season. Of 18 new scripted series to premiere on Netflix in 2017, 13 have been renewed, only two canceled and three are pending, with most if not all of them looking good to come back, including Spike Lee’s well received She’s Gotta Have It. Just in the past two days, Netflix renewed mega hit Stranger Things for a third season and new drama Mindhunter for a second.
