HBO’s Green Lantern Series: Kyle Chandler to Play Hal Jordan
Friday Night Lights alum Kyle Chandler is the latest actor to be invited to try on a Green Lantern Ring, HBO announced Wednesday.
In August, Josh Brolin was offered the role of Hal Jordan in HBO‘s live-action Lanterns series, but as THR.com later reported, the Avengers franchise vet declined the gig. Matthew McConaughey, Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor, Justified gunslinger Timothy Olyphant and Star Trek captain Chris Pine reportedly were also on the short list.

“You’ve been asking for a while. Well now (and just now!) it’s official,” DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn shared on Threads. “Welcome to the DCU, Kyle Chandler, our Hal Jordan.”
Our sister site Deadline first reported on Chandler’s potential involvement in September.
Produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, Lanterns was given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order back in June, with Damon Lindelof and Eisner Award winner Tom King set to pen the script. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive-produce with Lindelof and King.
Described by DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran as being “very much in the vein of True Detective,” Lanterns will follow new recruit John Stewart and legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
On the same day Chandler’s casting was confirmed, so was Aaron Pierre’s (Krypton, The Underground Railroad) in the role of John Stewart.
In addition to his aforementioned stint as Friday Night Lights‘ Coach Eric Taylor, Chandler’s previous TV credits include Netflix’s Bloodline, Hulu’s Catch-22 miniseries and Season 1 of Showtime’s Super Pumped.
What’s your take on the Chandler/Lanterns casting? Are you excited to see him tackle the role of Hal Jordan?
