In the year since Jesse Malin suffered a devastating spinal stroke that affected the use of his legs, his friends in the rock community have rallied together to lift his spirits and raise money for his substantial medical bills. Their latest effort is the tribute LP Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin. The 27-track collection features Bruce Springsteen, Counting Crows, Bleachers, Billie Joe Armstrong, Dinosuar Jr., Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello, and many others putting their own spin on Malin originals.

The album arrives Sept. 20, but you can hear Springsteen’s new cover of “She Don’t Love Me Now” right now. “Bruce gave it that Stax-soul-thing that we were dreaming of when we recorded the original,” Malin says in a statement. “It’s so surreal to me.” The original version of “She Don’t Love Me Now” first appeared on Malin’s 2015 album New York Before the War.

Springsteen and Malin have been friends for many years. They’ve played together at numerous Light of Days benefit shows, and they teamed up to record “Broken Radio” on Malin’s 2007 LP Glitter in the Gutter. “Bruce’s generosity, honesty and support are equally as powerful as his songwriting and performing,” Malin said. “Bruce is one of the guys. He walks it like he talks it. You spend some time with him, and it feels like you’ve known him for years. He’s like my friends in Queens, sitting around talking about Sinatra, the Clash, and the Pogues. He has that passion and excitement for life.”

Silver Patron Saints came together throughout the past year while Malin was undergoing medical treatment in Argentina. “I had no idea that my friends and the producers of this record were reaching out to so many great artists to have them do versions of my songs,” Malin said. “When I heard these versions, especially ‘She Don’t Love Me Now,’ it took me out of a dark time. I felt excited about life again, in a way that only music can do.”

Malin has been absent from the concert stage since his spinal stroke, but he’s returning Dec. 1 and 2 for two shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. He’ll be joined by Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, Butch Walker, J Mascis, Adam Duritz and David Immy of Counting Crows, the Hold Steady, Alejandro Escovedo, and others. The money raised from the shows will benefit Jesse’s Sweet Relief Artist Fund. The Dec. 1 show is sold out, but tickets remain for the 2nd.
