The early career of Kate Hudson

There’s probably a movie that comes to mind immediately when you think about the career of Kate Hudson. While her earliest film roles as she was breaking out into the industry include lesser-known pictures like Desert Blue (1998) and 200 Cigarettes (1999), she found fame with her breakout role in Almost Famous (2000) only a year or so later.

Her performance in the film as Penny Lane, one of the “band-aids” (not groupie!) who toured with fictional rock band Stillwater, remains iconic and still steals people’s hearts to this day. For her part as Penny, she earned an Academy Award nomination and won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

When did Kate Hudson start singing?

Though she spent much of her early life drawn to music, often writing music and lyrics of her own, once her career in Hollywood took off, she was hesitant to venture out in the music scene as well.

For so many years, it was like, ‘you don’t break what’s not broken.’ If you had success in one area of the arts, then you shouldn’t be venturing into another area,” she explained in a May interview with Vogue. “A part of me never really understood that. I think a lot of artists are drawn to and want to operate in different modalities, but the only reason we don’t pursue the things we love is because we’re afraid of what people think, which goes against what it is to make art anyway.”

However, letting go of her inhibitions, she sang a cover of “Firework” by Katy Perry via Zoom for a charity event at her son’s school, which would ultimately kick-start her music career in a way she hadn’t anticipated. None other than songwriter Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes heard the performance, and the rest was history.

I was just too afraid,” she told NPR’s All Things Considered of what held her back. “I was too afraid of the rejection. I was too afraid of the criticism. And then COVID happened — as for many people, I think, reevaluating your life, your art, the things that you love. And I just was like, if I don't make an album, it will be my great regret. So I just said, let's go. Let's do it.”

From there, she began writing songs and recording with Perry, as well as her husband Danny Fujikawa, which ultimately led to the release of her first body of work, Glorious, including her debut single “Talk About Love,” which came out in May of this year.

The album showcased Hudson’s unexpectedly gravelly vocals, shocking first-time listeners. Putting her fear behind her to pursue music has opened new doors for the 45-year-old actress, and we can’t wait to hear more from her in the years to come.
