TIAH was founded in 2018 by Winkler Reinis, Elsa Collins and Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade.

The organization works to raise awareness about both separated and reunified families and children at the United States-Mexico border as well as provide access to legal services and living essentials, facilitate trips, help individuals find shelter and more.

Winkler previously attended the fourth annual TIAH fundraising event in August 2022, which was conveniently held at his home in Los Angeles.

“We got an invitation (that read), ‘Come because your daughter and her friends are having an event,’” Winkler told TODAY and attendees at the event. “And then we look to where we were going, it was our house!”

The “Being Henry” author shared his daughter’s initial inspiration for forming the organization, explaining, “She’s sitting on the couch. She’s watching the news. She’s watching the stories about the children in cages.”

“She said, ‘Oh my god, those could be my children. My three boys,’” he continued. “And out of that came this with her two very good friends. A thought, follow through and an amazing organization.”

At the time, Winkler Reinis said that she saw herself in the mothers and her three sons in the children she was witnessing.

“That really was all it took. That was the only thing that separated us, was where we were born,” she explained. “There was literally nothing else…I just knew that I had to do something.”

Winkler and his wife share two children: daughter Zoe, 43, and son Max, 41. The actor is also a stepfather to his stepson, Jed, from his wife’s previous marriage.

The couple, who have been married since 1978, are also proud grandparents to six grandkids.

CORRECTION (Aug. 26, 2024, 6:23 ET): An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Zoe Winkler Reinis' age is 44. She is 43.
