Henry Winkler Wins His First Emmy 42 Years After Being Nominated for First Time
After over four decades of Emmy-nominated performances, Henry Winkler finally has an excuse to let the cat out.
The actor won his first Emmy on Monday night at the 70th Emmys for playing Gene Cousineau on the HBO show “Barry.” This comes after being nominated five times previously, first in 1976 for his iconic role as The Fonz on “Happy Days.”
In the intervening years, Winkler was also up for an award on the drama side after his work on “The Practice.” But his trip to the ceremony this year was his first as an Emmy nominee since 2000.
He faced impressive competition from this year’s category, including some past Emmys favorites. Tony Shalhoub, a perennial winner for “Monk,” was eligible for the first time for his work on the Amazon show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” First time Supporting Actor nominees Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”) and Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) also had solid chances of winning going into Monday night.
Winkler’s win blocked a repeat bid for Alec Baldwin, last year’s winner in the category.
