Here's how this 'Idol' contestant lost 70 pounds since his audition
On American Idol on Sunday night, top 24 contestant Caleb Lee Hutchinson got a surprise visit from his favorite past Idol, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery, who stopped in to give him some Idol advice.
“The thing about country music is it’s all about the song, you know, at the core of it,” McCreery told Hutchinson. “So you can think about that when you’re making your song choices … each week. Think about what’s gonna relate to people back home. But just enjoy it. Take time for yourself to take a breather, ’cause it’s gonna get wild. But I’m sure you’ll do great.”
For his solo round, Hutchinson chose to sing Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” The judges weren’t blown away by his rendition, though. In fact, judge Luke Bryan told Hutchinson, “I wouldn’t say that was the best song for you that we’ve heard you do. I mean, when you did the Josh Turner song, that was right in your wheelhouse. Just keep delivering your style, but also, you know, dig in.” Bryan also said parts of Hutchinson’s performance were “pitchy,” while Katy Perry described the end as “a little shaky.”
Hutchinson may not have stunned, but he did impress everyone with his noticeably lighter physical appearance — 70 pounds lighter, to be exact. When host Ryan Seacrest pointed out how much weight the contestant has lost since his first audition and Bryan asked him what he did, Caleb said, “One day I was like, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if, like, I drank water and walked every night?’ The more the Instagram picture likes went up, the more I wanted to hit the treadmill.”
