Here's why Tori Spelling of '90210' is rocking an eye patch (read if you wear contacts)

Tori Spelling is making an eye patch chic. Unfortunately fashion isn't the reason behind the "Beverly Hills, 90210" star's facial wear.

On an episode of podcast "9021OMG" which she hosts with Jennie Garth, Spelling shared a "cautionary tale" about contacts: The 49-year-old accidentally gave herself an eye ulcer after wearing her contacts to bed.

"So I have contacts, but I wear daily ones," Spelling said on the podcast which was released earlier this week. "And at the end of the day ... I don't take them out. I sleep in them and it's not healthy."

She added that she's gone "maybe 20 days" without changing them.

Spelling posted a photo wearing a pink, bedazzled eye-patch on her personal Instagram last week, too, flagging she had an eye ulcer.

While it might seem easier not to take them out, it's not a good idea to leave contacts in while you sleep.

In fact, medical professionals advise never sleeping in your contacts.

Sleeping in daily wear contacts increases the risk of an eye infection according to a 2020 blog post from the Cleveland Clinic.

The CDC also said in a paper published in 2017 that "contact lens–related eye infections, which can lead to serious outcomes, including blindness" are associated with a number of risk factors including sleeping in your contact lenses, which was the first referenced risk.

Cleveland Clinic ophthalmologist Allison Babiuch said in the post that it's important to allow your eyes a chance to take a break.

“Redness and irritation is a common problem if you leave your contacts in when you sleep. But you can also experience other problems with your cornea, which is the front surface of your eye,” Babiuch said in the blog post.

“Your eyes are sensitive and very susceptible to damage, so making sure you take care of them is extremely important,” she said.
