Hollywood’s Big Risks: 28 Daring Studio Films from the Last 15 Years

Hollywood studios have become so dependent over the last decade on comic book films and mind-numbing tentpoles attached to pre-existing IP that it can feel like a minor miracle any time a major studio breaks the mold.

Whether it’s “Crazy Rich Asians” proving there’s no reason to fear the romantic comedy genre or studios allowing auteurs such as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve to see their polarizing visions through, the most daring Hollywood studio films are often some of the best. And sometimes, the most daring studio films, like Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix Resurrections,” could be the last we’ll see of their kind, especially amid the new world order reigning at Warner Bros. Discovery under new CEO David Zaslav.
And other, risky franchise films like the fourth “Matrix” film rise above the pack of monotonous sequels (see Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049”). While Hollywood is always in danger of losing its creative groove in favor of superhero films and franchise entries, the following 28 films prove studio risk-taking isn’t dead yet.
