Hot Boys, Big Tymers Reunite For Historic Performance At Lil Wayne’s WeezyAna Festival
The Hot Boys’ long-awaited reunion went down this past weekend at Lil Wayne’s annual WeezyAna Fest in the group’s hometown of New Orleans, La.
On Saturday evening (Nov. 2), the legendary rap quartet and the Big Tymers took the stage at the Smoothie King Center, where the two groups performed their greatest hits, both as a unit and individually.
The proceedings, held by Live Nation Urban and livestreamed exclusively on Prime Video and the Amazon Music Twitch channel, kicked off with a solo set by Lil Wayne, who opened with his Tha Carter III cut, “3Peat.” The veteran then moved onto signature jams including “Hustler Musik,” “I’m Single,” “Love Me,” “Lollipop” and “Mrs. Officer.”
For the next segment of the show, Weezy called on his guests to rock the crowd, as LSU Tiger and rising rap star Flau’Jae appeared for a performance of her Lil Wayne collab, “Came Out A Beast,” followed by a spirted set by Big Tymers, who pulled out their classics “Still Fly” and “Get Your Roll on.”
The remaining Hot Boys would be summoned to the stage one by one, as B.G., Juvenile, and Turk ran through a mix of solo cuts before joining forces for their breakout 1997 single, “We on Fire.”
With the Big Tymers joining in for the Guerilla Warfare smash, “Hot Girl,” the wide-ranging set was capped off with a raucous performance of Juvenile’s 1998 release, “Back That Azz Up,” arguably the definitive hit of the Cash Money era.
The Hot Boys reunion came after numerous delays due to internal strife among the group members. Originally billed to perform as a full-unit at Essence Fest earlier this year, Lil Wayne appeared separately from his Hot Boys groupmates. Hot Boys member Turk was not present for the group’s portion of the set, sparking a back-and-forth between himself and groupmate B.G. that bled over onto social media.
However, according to Mannie Fresh, the group have moved past their differences enough to ensure that there will be performances featuring all members of the crew moving forward.
“This won’t be the last time,” Mannie Fresh told Variety. “This won’t be like, ‘They did it and that’s it.’ We plan on doing this for a long time.”
