How That Infamous Bite Changed ‘Walking Dead’ Star Josh McDermitt’s Life
It’s almost been one year since that fateful Sunday night when fans of The Walking Dead were treated to one of the most terrifying, disturbing, graphic and hilarious moments in the show’s seven season history… when Eugene bit Dwight.
Josh McDermitt remembers filming the scene like it was yesterday — “It was very hard,” the actor explains, then correctly corrects himself, “The scene was, not Dwight. A little bit.” His poker-faced deadpan is so perfectly stoic that you can almost miss the double entendre.
Now that a year has passed since the premiere of the Season Six episode “Twice As Far” aired, McDermitt takes a look at how his life has changed. “People definitely look at me differently on the street,” he admits. “Guys coming up to me all the time, asking me to sign their wiener. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don’t; I try and gauge whether the man has showered or not.”
These days, McDermitt is biting for the other team, as his character, Dr. Eugene Porter, has apparently switched sides to support his former foe, Negan and the Saviors, and even teaming with Dwight, the owner of the crotch he once bit. Despite this new evil streak, he’s still not comfortable eating a hot dog in public. “People have Photoshop skills these days. Who knows what they’re going to Photoshop into my hands!”

McDermitt has had nearly three years to grow accustomed to his odd hairstyle on The Walking Dead. At first, the Tennessee Top Hat gave him pause, calling it “abhorrent” and telling the others on set to take him to “Walmart to buy a hat, man, because this is disgusting!”
Now, McDermitt loves the Kentucky Waterfall, encouraging his costars to “drink from the Mullet of Life” to renew themselves and their spirits during the long, hot shooting days in Georgia.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
