LEXINGTON, Va. (WFXR) – Drive-in movies have been around for over 90 years to bring a unique way to watch movies and Hull’s has been named as #3 Best Drive-in, in America according to Fodors.

Hull’s Drive-In is a community-owned theatre that has been open since 1950 and keeps its old-timey charm with its metal box speakers making drivers roll down their car windows. Hulls, Angels, a volunteer organization, helps run Hull’s Drive-in so that viewers can come to see movies and classics.

Drive-in movies became popular back in the 40s and 50s when car culture was “king.” The theaters also became successful in the baby boom era since young parents could bring their whole family for dinner and a movie.

Hull’s Drive-In all-night Halloween horror marathon to be a scary good time

The concept of a drive-in movie is to allow people to sit in the privacy of their cars and watch a movie on a projected big screen.

Later on in the 60s and 70s, drive-ins became infamous for teens and adults to partake in frisky business with their dates or significant others in the back of the car along with whatever substances they wanted to bring.

Once VCR and home entertainment became popular few drive-ins remained to stay open nationwide. However, there are still locations across the United States including the Hull’s in Lexington.
