Ian McKellen Will Return as Gandalf on This One Condition

Andy Serkis will return as Gollum in a new Lord of the Rings film, but he may not be the only original cast member interested in returning to Middle-earth.

In a new interview with The Times, Ian McKellen was asked if he might be happy to appear in the new film himself.

McKellen played Gandalf, and (according to The Times) it is said that his character is set to feature in The Hunt for Gollum. "But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan," McKellen said, but would he be interested if the offer came around? "If I'm alive," the two-time Academy Award nominee said.

David Zaslav, CEO at Warner Bros. Discovery, recently announced that Peter Jackson will return to the studio to produce the new film that follows fan-favorite Gollum.

Eyeing a 2026 release, The Hunt for Gollum sees Andy Serkis return to his iconic role while also acting as director.

Further details are sparse. There's no synopsis, no other cast members and no exact release date, but the project has piqued the interest of many Lord of the Rings fans.
