'Idol' contestant flubs performance and is eliminated while also making TV history
American Idol contestant Catie Turner might be experiencing a “Manic Monday” after her performance Sunday night.
When starting into her rendition of the Bangles’ “Manic Monday,” Turner forgot the words, which left her scrambling on stage. But she managed to recover and finish the rest of the song.
Judge Luke Bryan told Turner, “Catie, you have been in this competition since day one, and you have not had one glitch. So, what just happened to you is OK, darling. All right? It happens. It happens to me.” Turner said, “It’s just not my night. But that’s OK.” Katy Perry immediately corrected her. “No, no, no. Don’t say that,” Perry said. “Words are powerful. It is your night.”
Lionel Richie put things into perspective when he told Turner, “You know, I love the illusion that we have created. Everyone thinks the word is perfect in this business. It’s never perfect. It’s never perfect. You understand me? So, when it happens like that, it’s called recovery. How well did you recover? And the answer is, fantastic. You did a great job.”
In the end, Turner met her fate when she was eliminated from the competition, along with Jurnee.
Meanwhile, Idol’s exclusive rights to open up the entire Prince catalog for the first time in TV history allowed other contestants to shine, including Caleb Lee Hutchinson, who did “When Doves Cry,” and Gabby Barrett on “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?”
Host Ryan Seacrest announced that, no matter who wins the competition, all seven contestants on Sunday night’s show will be hitting the road this summer as part of the “American Idol Tour.” The top five contestants — Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, and Michael J. Woodard — will be flying to Nashville to work with Idol‘s very own Carrie Underwood.
